The CognEYEzant Project: 365 days of creative representations of the eye.
If we could learn to look into each other’s eyes, perhaps we could learn about the complex, infinite, and very human nature within each of us.
Every day, for 365 days, I will be making a creative representation of an eye. The eyes may be from my imagination, of people I know, or gathered from people I’ve met on the street. With each day I hope to facilitate awareness of one another. With each eye I want to shed light on the unique and infinite stories we have within us.
The title, CognEYEzant, is adapted from and pronounced the same as the word cognizant. The English Oxford Living Dictionary defines cognizant as, “having knowledge or being aware of”.
This project is focused on being aware and knowledgable of the humanity within each of us. And we can do that by looking into each other’s eyes.
I chose to substitute the short i in cognizant with the word eye. I understand that the two sounds differ greatly, however I chose the title because it may make you look closer and ask questions. Just as we could take a closer look at each other and become curious. And when you look closer you can find explanation, meaning —just like you may have, by reading this post.
I’ve been pulled to eyes for many reasons: they make a face come alive, they express emotion and character, they give humanity. Eyes are ageless, raceless, genderless, and each is completely unique. If we seek out each other’s eyes, we are also seeking out each other’s stories, and, hopefully, those stories will lead us to create an accepting and unified world.
I believe, we are all connected by the fact that we have different perceptions and our eyes are the ways with which we can make and share our perceptions. So let’s spend more time looking.
